Founded in 1986 by Artistic Director Debra Loewen, Wild Space Dance Company's mission is to expand the audience for contemporary dance through performance and educational programs in the greater Milwaukee area and throughout southeastern Wisconsin, reaching diverse communities. Artistically, the company emphasizes original dance works, improvisation, and choreography inspired by the community, specific environments and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Wild Space has created more than 100 major works, which have been performed throughout Wisconsin and in New York, Chicago, Japan and Korea. The company presents three season performances each year as well as extensive outreach programs in area schools. Known for its site-specific works and artistic collaborations, the company has garnered local, regional and national recognition, including the April 2008 issue of Dance Magazine, and has been listed among the "Best Performances of the Year" by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for the past 6 years. Wild Space is a company-in-residence at Lincoln Middle School of the Arts in Milwaukee and Lawrence University in Appleton, and has taught in over 60 schools throughout Wisconsin.
